“Just before 3:30 p.m. Friday, officers were called to JBS, 555 South Stuhr Road, after a machine reportedly crashed into a man’s head, killing him.

GIPD identified the man as Esteban Mantilla, a 48-year-old Cuban man from Grand Island.

Sgt. Phoukhong Manivong said Sunday that officers gave CPR to Mantilla before he was taken to CHI Health-St. Francis where he was pronounced deceased.

On Tuesday, Capt. Jim Duering said GIPD does not suspect any criminal activity and that the incident has been deemed “an industrial accident.””

Currently, OSHA is investigating the exact cause of the accident. According to investigators, no foul play is suspected. What is unknown is whether the worker was following proper safety protocols or not. If so, a case could be made for wrongful death due to negligence.
